The 5Cs of Diamonds
Diamonds may appear similar at first glance, but each stone carries its own story of brilliance, clarity, and craftsmanship.
To help buyers make informed decisions, the diamond industry follows a universal grading system known as the 5Cs – Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat Weight, and Certification.
These five characteristics work together to define a diamond’s overall appearance, beauty, and market value.
A Diamond
A diamond’s beauty is defined by more than just its sparkle – it’s a balance of precise craftsmanship and natural geometry. Every stone is evaluated for its weight ratio (how its weight compares to its diameter), girdle thickness (which impacts durability), symmetry of its facets, and the quality of polish across its surface. Together, these elements decide how brilliantly a diamond interacts with light.
While many confuse cut with shape, they represent two different qualities. Shape is the outer silhouette of the diamond — the classic round, or the many elegant fancy shapes. Cut, however, refers to the intricate arrangement of its facets, which determines how well the diamond captures and reflects light.
